The Northern Illinois University College of
Law is proud to host its 12th Annual Symposium. It has the ambitious goal
of bringing together practicing attorneys and judges, academics in the
fields of law and social science, community advocates, and law enforcement
personnel for presentations and panel discussions with audience
participation, focused on issues related to the pervasive societal problem
of domestic violence. The Symposium format is the result of a collaborative
effort by The NIU College of Law, Prairie State Legal Services and the NIU
Center for the Study of Family Violence and Sexual Assault.*
Three discussion sessions will take place.
The first will address situations in which the established system of relief
may be perceived to victimize the victim of domestic violence. The second
will evaluate the effectiveness of existing statutory remedies. A final
wrap-up session will address proposals for reform. These sessions will be
followed by a reception offering the opportunity for informal interaction
among panelists and all in attendance.
