In celebration of national Fair Housing Month on Wednesday, April 21, from 12:00 pm-1:00 pm, attorney Emily Petri of Prairie State Legal Services will lead a free Zoom presentation about fair housing law and explain how to obtain legal assistance to seek remedies for these acts from Prairie State. Registration is free and open to everyone online at tinyurl.com/FairHousing-PSLS.
Fair housing is the right of a person to choose housing free from discrimination. In the housing market, “discrimination” means a practice that limits housing choice because of someone’s particular trait. Only certain traits are protected under the law. Under federal law, those traits are race, color, religion, gender, national origin, familial status (families with children), and disability. In Illinois, the law protects the same traits as federal law plus ancestry, age, military or military discharge status, marital status, protective order status, and sexual orientation.
This project is funded by the City of Bloomington and Town of Normal.
