Paralegal/Support - Ready to Work Program
Prairie State Legal Services, Inc. (PSLS) is a non-profit civil legal aid organization with 40 years of experience providing high quality civil legal services to low-income persons, with 12 field offices in 36 counties in northern and central Illinois. Our expertise extends to the full range of civil legal issues commonly encountered by low-income persons; this includes family law, public benefits, consumer law, and foreclosure. We also operate a number of special projects, with diverse funding to provide legal advocacy services to persons with HIV/AIDS; children and adults with disabilities; senior citizens; the homeless; and victims of domestic violence. Annually, PSLS handles over 22,000 applications for legal help and serves over 16,000 clients. PSLS has strong training and litigation support for its staff.
We are seeking applicants for a PARALEGAL position in our community legal services office in WAUKEGAN. The position is full-time - 37.5 hours per week.
JOB DESCRIPTION: This position will work with attorneys in our Ready to Work special project, which helps clients remove legal barriers to employment. The position is based in Waukegan, but will also provide remote support and assistance to attorneys in our Peoria and Joliet offices. The individual will work closely with attorneys on issues such as criminal records relief, drivers’ license reinstatement, professional licensing reinstatement, child support matters, and other issues affecting a client’s access to employment.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should possess a 2-year Associate’s Degree, a 4-year Bachelor’s Degree and/or a Paralegal Certificate. Applicants currently enrolled in an accredited paralegal program will be considered. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in a private law firm or in the public sector as a paralegal or legal assistant and/or who have graduated from an accredited paralegal training program. Spanish language proficiency is very desirable for this position. The successful applicant will have strong interpersonal skills, excellent oral/written communications, and computer competency (including Microsoft Office Suite and G Suite). The applicant must work effectively as a team member.
Occasional travel is required, with a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. Strong organizational and information management skills, the ability to prioritize and work with minimal supervision, and excellent time management skills are all required. Compassion and commitment to serving the needs of low-income clients, especially those impacted by the criminal justice system, is essential.
COMPENSATION: Competitive wage starting at $15/hr., depending on experience; excellent benefits, including medical and dental, retirement plan, and generous paid leave.
