Volunteer Lawyer Program Coordinator
Location: St. Charles
Hours: full-time

Prairie State Legal Services, Inc. is seeking applicants for the position of VOLUNTEER LAWYER PROGRAM COORDINATOR in its ST. CHARLES office.  The position will serve a four-county area.  Prairie State is a 90-attorney legal aid program with 12 offices serving 36 counties in northern and central ILLINOIS outside of Cook County.  Prairie State has a vibrant volunteer program to supplement the work of its paid staff.  Many of Prairie State’s offices have a staff member who coordinates the Volunteer Lawyer Program; the Coordinator helps set the tone for the volunteer services from that office.  The Coordinator is the face of Prairie State with many community lawyers and is interacting with various segments of the legal community.

Prairie State offers a dynamic working environment and the chance to work with others committed to equal access to justice and helping clients meet their basic needs.

Duties include:

  • Oversee the administration of the local Volunteer Lawyer Program, under the direction of the managing attorney
  • Recruit and retain volunteer attorneys in DeKalb, Kane, Kendall, and DuPage Counties
  • Work with law firms, solo practitioners, bar associations, and corporate law departments to promote and expand pro bono services
  • Place cases with pro bono volunteers in the areas of law consistent with Prairie State priorities, including housing, consumer, public benefits, and family law
  • Interview prospective clients, assess eligibility, and evaluate cases for placement with a volunteer attorney
  • Prepare form pleadings and instructional materials for volunteers
  • Manage client files and database records
  • Coordinate pro bono clinics and develop new pro bono opportunities
  • Coordinate volunteer recognition
  • Ensure that Prairie State’s pro bono work is accomplished in accordance with funder requirements, including regulations of the Legal Services Corporation

The position is full-time.  Salary depends on experience.  Prairie State offers generous benefits including healthcare with an employee contribution to premiums; retirement plan; and paid leave.

QUALIFICATIONS:  The ideal candidate will be creative, flexible, and self-motivated; have excellent written and oral communication skills; and be able to cultivate and maintain strong relationships with pro bono volunteers.  Interest in and commitment to assisting low-income individuals in the resolution of their legal problems.  Successful candidate must have strong communication and organizational skills.  Experience in law office practice or volunteer coordination is desirable.  Bachelor’s degree required; Spanish-speaking is a plus.  While this position does not require a law degree, it is a professional position and we welcome applications from attorneys, paralegals, and others with relevant experience.  No phone calls please.  Send a resume, short writing sample, and three professional references to: AND
