Supervising Attorney

Prairie State Legal Services (PSLS) is a not-for-profit legal aid organization that provides civil legal aid services to the poor, elderly, and people with disabilities. PSLS has 12 offices serving 36 counties throughout northern and central Illinois. PSLS focuses services on legal problems that impact the ability of our clients to meet their basic human needs, including physical safety, access to healthcare, adequate housing, and similar needs. It is the only legal aid organization in the majority of its service area. Job Description

The Supervising Attorney shall, in general, assist the Managing Attorney in the administration of the Telephone Counseling Service. We are seeking a Supervising Attorney for Telephone Counseling Services for our Waukegan office. However, the successful candidate will be available to relocate offices to the Wheaton area as early as January 2020.


Among other duties as assigned, the Supervising Attorney will:

  • Interview and advise clients calling from throughout our service area who are in need of assistance with diverse legal issues
  • Evaluate clients’ legal issue, conduct research while the caller is on the telephone, and provide legal advice relevant to the clients’ needs
  • Provide training to the new Telephone Counselors working in his/her office
  • Supervise the legal work of all Telephone Counselors in that office
  • Assist in long-term planning regarding intake issues
  • Maintain on-site presence in the Waukegan office during Telephone Counseling hours, with limited telecommuting

Salary and Benefits

Part-time position, 25 hours per week. Pay starts at $25.12/hour, more depending on experience; Part-time employees are provided with generous leave time and the opportunity to enroll in the organization’s retirement plan.


  • Currently admitted to the practice of law in the State of Illinois, or admitted in another state and eligible for licensing within three months of the first date of employment with PSLS
  • A member in good standing of any state bar for at least two years
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral/written communication, research skills, and computer competency
  • Organizational and case management skills
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to serving disadvantaged populations and we will give preference to candidates who have knowledge of poverty law and experience providing services to low-income individuals. Candidates who are Spanish-English bilingual are preferred.
