Gaining Independence for Liam
Meet Liam, a man in his 40s living with disabilities who also has mental health issues. Liam has worked hard over the years to learn to be independent and manage daily life on his own. For 20 years, Liam had received support under a guardianship, but Liam felt the guardianship was no longer needed. Liam's doctors agreed. Liam turned to PSLS for legal help to regain his independence. Under PSLS' advice, Liam obtained a formal report from his doctor showing their support for the termination of the guardianship. PSLS drafted and filed the necessary paperwork to support the request for the termination of guardianship. PSLS helped Liam present evidence in court as to why the guardianship was no longer needed. The court agreed with Liam and terminated Liam's guardianship! Thanks to funding from the Winnebago County Community Mental Health Board (WCCMHB), PSLS was able to provide high-quality legal services to Liam to obtain his independence.
