Helping Seniors Navigate the United States Tax Court

September 29, 2026
Meet Cora. She contacted PSLS after receiving a threatening letter from the IRS. The letter was a notice of deficiency, stating that Cora owed a balance of over $9,500 based on unreported income. The letter made Cora fear that the IRS would soon garnish her income. Cora and her husband Max are both seniors whose only income is social security. In the letter sent to Cora, the IRS alleged that Cora has $30,000 in unreported income from Uber in California.
PSLS attorneys met with Cora and investigated the case. PSLS discovered that someone had stolen Cora's identity and was driving for Uber in Georgia, with all of that income being reported under Cora's social security number. PSLS assisted Cora in filing a police report and reported the identity theft directly to Uber. Because Cora filed taxes jointly with her husband, PSLS agreed to jointly represent both Cora and her husband in this matter.
PSLS represented Cora and Max in the United States Tax Court and worked with Uber to issue corrected tax forms. Through this legal advocacy, including appeals, Cora and Max won! PSLS successfully resolved the matter with the IRS and the IRS conceded in full. This was a tremendous victory! As a result of PSLS' advocacy, Cora and Max avoided an over $9,500 tax balance that they never should have owed.
